Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program - 08/08

Spring 2009 Application Open - Deadline: October 7, 2008

The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic year. The program aims to diversify the kinds of student who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The program serves students who have been under-represented in study abroad which includes but is not limited to: students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving institutions, and students with disabilities. The Gilman Program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states.

The Gilman Program is pleased to announce an increase in the amount of awards to be given this academic year. Over 1200 scholarships will be granted during the Academic Year 2008-2009. Additionally, an increased number of $3000 Critical Need Language Supplements are available for students studying a critical need language for a total possible award of $8000. Eligibility: Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the time they are studying abroad and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.

Alfa Fellowship Program - 08/08

The Alfa Fellowship Program is a high-level professional development exchange program placing 10 qualified American citizens per year in work assignments at leading organizations in Russia in the fields of business, economics, journalism, law, and public policy. Key goals of the Alfa Fellowship Program are expanding networks of American and Russian professionals, developing greater intercultural understanding, and advancing US/Russian relations.

The program includes language training, seminar programs, and extended professional experience. Fellows receive travel, free housing, monthly stipends, and insurance. Russian language proficiency is preferred though not required at the time of application.

The application deadline for the Alfa Fellowship Program is December 1, 2008. Applications can be completed online.

Requirements:
-U.S. citizen between the ages of 25 and 35
-Graduate degree and professional experience in business, economics, journalism, mass communications, law, international relations, political science, government, or public policy. Candidates without a graduate degree must demonstrate extensive and equivalent professional experience in their field
- Outstanding professional achievement and academic qualifications
- Active involvement in community or public service
- Russian language experience is preferred, though not required at the time of application
- Evidence of leadership potential
